In the Spring of 2004, HBHS opened an
on-site Stop ‘N Counseling Center.
Located in Room A1, it’s purpose is to
serve any student who “stops in” for
counseling services to discuss concerns,
explore options, and take responsibility
for choices. The Center offers group
and individual counseling services on
issues such as: peer and parent
relationships, decision making, problem
solving, stress management,
organization, motivation, grief,
addiction, abuse, anger, depression,
eating disorders, study/grade
difficulties, etc.
Before the Stop ‘N Center, HBHS did not
have a specific counseling program
available to students. The
psychologists found that there was a
need for counseling specifically during
tutorial, break, and lunch when students
were stopping by to talk. The solution
was the Stop ‘N Center, which is open
everyday from 8:00am-3:00pm. It is
modeled after the Stop ‘N Center at
Edison High School, which has been
extremely successful in serving students
for 15+ years.
The Stop ‘N Center mission statement is:
“To help all students be successful in
school, academically and socially, by
enhancing students’ self-esteem,
self-efficiency, sense of
responsibility, and providing support
during a time of emotional difficulty
and/or crisis.” In order to achieve
this mission, the Center provides brief
individual and group counseling, crisis
management, consultation and accepts
referrals from faculty, staff, students
and parents. The Center is designed as
a safe, confidential place where
students can entrust in a trained
psychologist to get information and
discuss issues.
Along with counseling services, the
Counseling Center:
-
Provides informational pamphlets and
brochures on common adolescent
issues
-
Promotes special programs to
encourage healthy life styles, such
as Red Ribbon Week, DARE, Conflict
Mediation, Friday Night Live
-
Researches new programs and
implement programs that might
further help students at the school,
such as Freshmen and Sophomore
Academy programs.
